Hiking trails shift plant species' realized climatic niches and locally increase species richness

چکیده

Aim The presence and use of trails may change plant species' realized climatic niches via modified abiotic biotic conditions including propagule transport, allowing competition-pressed alpine species to expand their rear edges towards warmer locations lowland extend leading cooler locations. We investigated whether mountain indeed act as corridors for colonization shift niches, resulting in higher richness trailsides. Location Dovrefjell Abisko area the Scandes mountains Norway Sweden. Methods surveyed community composition disturbances along 16 hiking summer 2018 (Dovrefjell) 2019 (Abisko). linked changes optimum variation climate, trail effects resident characteristics. Results Plant was on average 24% greater trailside than interior vegetation plots. Proximity accounted 9% harshness 55% explained our model. Trailsides increased richness, especially relatively species-poor sites close introduction points (each accounting model gains). Shifts optima related undisturbed optimum, with being more likely move into While some disturbance-associated shifted colder locations, contrary expectations this not case species. Overall, shifts resulted overlapping trailsides vegetation. Main conclusion Trails can locally increase by creating opportunities colonizing weaker competitors. Because prevailing disturbance, they even provide persistence downward expansion species, aiding conservation efforts.

Corridors increase plant species richness at large scales.

Habitat fragmentation is one of the largest threats to biodiversity. Landscape corridors, which are hypothesized to reduce the negative consequences of fragmentation, have become common features of ecological management plans worldwide. Despite their popularity, there is little evidence documenting the effectiveness of corridors in preserving biodiversity at large scales. Using a large-scale re...

Climatic niche breadth and species richness in temperate treefrogs

Aim Patterns of species richness are often closely linked with climate, but the specific mechanisms by which species’ climatic niches underlie large-scale richness patterns remain poorly understood. It has been hypothesized that reduced temperature seasonality in the tropics promotes the evolution of species with narrow temperature niche breadths, and that this hypothesis helps explain high tro...

Species Richness, Evenness and Plant Community Stability 22 Years after Ploughing a Semiarid Rangeland

Rangeland ploughing and cultivation using dry land farming crops may be amajor reason for the destruction of natural resources in the semiarid and sub-humid regionswhich may significantly change the composition and reduce the stability of the affectedcommunities. In present research, an abandoned ploughed site was compared with a nearbyreference site in the semiarid rangelands of Baharkish, Quc...

Climate-Induced Elevational Range Shifts and Increase in Plant Species Richness in a Himalayan Biodiversity Epicentre

Global average temperature increase during the last century has induced species geographic range shifts and extinctions. Montane floras, in particular, are highly sensitive to climate change and mountains serve as suitable observation sites for tracing climate-induced biological response. The Himalaya constitute an important global biodiversity hotspot, yet studies on species' response to clima...

Endozoochory by slugs can increase bryophyte establishment and species richness

Herbivory can aff ect plant community composition and diversity by removing biomass and reducing light competition. Herbivory may particularly benefi t low growing species such as bryophytes, which are frequently limited by light competition. Gastropods are important herbivores of seed plants and cryptogams, furthermore, they can disperse propagules such as seeds and spores via endozoochory. Ho...
